how to get scratches out of plexiglass

Plexiglass is a popular material used for boat windows and other surfaces. However, over time, scratches can mar its appearance and—even worse—hinder your visibility. Luckily, we have composed a step-by-step guide on how to remove scratches from plexiglass and get those unsightly scratches out of your boat’s scratched plexiglass.

Keep reading to learn about how to remove plexiglass imperfections from your boat and set sail without any scratches in your way.

How to Remove Scratches From Your Boat’s Plexiglass?

1) Gather the Necessary Materials

Before starting the scratch removal process, you’ll need a few tools. Gather the following materials:

  • Glass repair kit
  • Acrylic scratch remover
  • Non-gel toothpaste
  • Clear nail polish
  • Buffing machine
  • Glass scrub compound
  • An ultra-absorbent towel
  • Microfiber wipes

2) Clean the Surface

Begin by cleaning the plexiglass, specifically focusing on the affected area. Use a mild soap or specialized plexiglass cleaner to remove any dirt, grime, or debris from the scratched area. Rinse it with clean water and dry it gently with The Absorber®.

3) Assess the Depth of the Scratches

Next, take a gander at the depth of the scratches. While light scratches can often be repaired easily with non-abrasive methods, deeper scratches may require some professional help. This step will help you determine the best approach for scratch removal.

4) Apply the Appropriate Scratch Removal Method

For light scratches, try using non-gel toothpaste. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste directly onto the scratch, and rub it gently with a clean, damp cloth. Rinse the area with water and check out the results. If the scratches are still visible, repeat this step until you’re happy with the results.

If the scratches are deeper, an acrylic scratch remover can suffice. Follow the instructions on the product, and work it into the scratched area. Use circular motions to buff the scratch until it’s no longer visible.

5) Apply Nail Polish (Yes, You Read That Right)

Time to dig through the bathroom cabinet. If the above steps didn’t work, then you should learn how to polish plexiglass with nail polish. Apply a thin layer of clear nail polish to the scratched area, covering the entire length of the scratch or scratches. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding to polish and buff.

6) Polish & Buff

Now for the fun part. Wet the plexiglass surface with water, apply a glass scrub compound, and buff the scratched area with a buffing machine. Continue until the scratch is blended with the surrounding surface. Clean the area with water, and dry it with The Absorber®.
